Undergraduate Scholarships
Every year, the Foundation calls for candidates of Ileian descent and announces scholarships for studies leading to a degree from a Greek University.
APPLICATION SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
In September of every year, the Foundation publishes – in the Athenian and local Ileian Press, as well as on its website – a public call for candidates to submit their application for a scholarship.
The applications are examined for completeness by the Administration office and then are assessed by the Foundation’s Board.
Final approval, according to the law, is given, subsequent to a concurring and reasoned opinion of the Council of National Bequests, by the Region of Attiki, to whom the Ministry of Finance has transferred the relevant jurisdiction.
The list of successful candidates is posted on the Foundation’s website.
CRITERIA FOR CANDIDATE SELECTION
For the Academic Year 2010–2011, the Foundation is announcing:
a. Three (3) scholarships for excelling students of Ileian descent. The sole criterion will be their performance during the Pan-Hellenic university examinations, regardless of the secondary school (Lykeion) they graduated from or family income.
b. Eighteen (18) scholarships for first-year students who are of Ileian descent and, preferably, graduated from a secondary school (Lykeion) in Ileia Prefecture. The primary criterion will be their collective university admission examination points (18,000 points minimum), on the condition that their family income does not exceed € 30,000.
c. Two (2) scholarships for students in their second year or later who are of Ileian descent and, preferably, graduated from a secondary school (Lykeion) in Ileia Prefecture, were not selected as Foundation scholars in their first year of studies, received a minimum average grade of 8.5 during the previous academic year(s), have completed all their courses and their family income does not exceed € 30,000.
d. Three (3) scholarships for first-year students who are of Ileian descent and, preferably, graduated from a secondary school (Lykeion) in Ileia Prefecture based on social criteria, i.e., large family, health problems, deceased parent, etc. The Foundation Board of Directors will consider these factors along with candidate performance as well as family income, which must not exceed € 30,000.
e. Four (4) special scholarships for the students of Ileian descent who, after graduating from secondary schools (Lykeia) in Ileia Prefecture, received the highest number of collective university admission points and have registered for their first year in one of the following university schools/departments: Agronomics, Forestry, Veterinary Medicine, Environmental Sciences, and Pedagogy, on the condition that the school/department was either the first or second choice on their computerized application form. The Foundation Board of Directors will also evaluate candidate performance along with family income, which must not exceed € 30,000.
The Board of Directors may decide to raise the family income eligibility limit for the scholarships defined in (b), (c), (d), and (e) in cases where there are additional children, taking into consideration the number of children and where each child is attending university.
It may also—at its discretion—modify the above criteria depending on the quantity and quality of candidate applications.
SCHOLARSHIP DURATION
The scholarship consists of payment of a cash amount until the end of the scholar’s studies, on condition that all the criteria for awarding and renewing the scholarship are met. Its duration cannot be more than the time stipulated by the syllabus of the scholar’s university.
The scholarship is payable for the nine months of the academic year (October-June) and is renewed for every year thereafter, based on the progress of the scholar’s studies.
A scholarship cannot be postponed by the candidate. Also, the Foundation reserves the right to revoke or terminate a scholarship when it judges that grave reasons exist.
PREREQUISITES FOR SCHOLARSHIP RENEWAL
After the academic year is over and after the results of the supplemental examinations in September are published, scholars submit (not later than November 10th) to the Foundation an official transcript of their grades for the current and previous years, which will determine whether their scholarship will be renewed.
Specifically, for those candidates selected upon their entrance at university, renewal of their scholarship for each succeeding year is approved:
(a) after every academic year is over (i.e. after the examination periods of February, June and the supplemental one in September) where scholars are permitted no more than three incomplete courses (irrespective of academic year) and
(b) the average grade in the courses in which the scholar has passed the exams successfully must be at least 6.5.
For those candidates selected for scholarship for the first time who are, however, already in the second year of university or above, renewal of their scholarship for each succeeding year is approved only if they have passed all their exams and their average grade is 8 and above.
Calculation of the average grade is based either on the courses taken in the last year or on the cumulative average of all previous years, whichever of the two is higher.
The scholarship is suspended if the scholar fails to meet the above conditions for one time and is discontinued if the scholar fails to meet the above conditions for two consecutive academic years.
AMOUNT OF FIRST-YEAR SCHOLARSHIPS
The first-year scholarship recipients receive a monthly amount of €200 in their first year of registration on the Foundation lists. The second- and subsequent- year students receive a monthly amount of €350 in their first year of registration on the Foundation lists.
AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP FOR SUBSEQUENT YEARS
Scholarship grants, for academic years following the first year, are determined according to the following table:
Category Α: Average Grade 8.5 and above €350.00/month
Category B: Average Grade 6.5 up to 8.49 €250.00/month
