Undergraduate Scholarships

Every year, the Foundation calls for candidates of Ileian descent and announces:

45 scholarships for first-year students
5 scholarships for second and subsequent year students

for studies leading to a degree from a Greek University.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

In September of every year, the Foundation publishes – in the Athenian and local Ileian Press, as well as on its website – a public call for candidates to submit their application for a scholarship.

The applications are examined for completeness by the Administration office and then are assessed by the Foundation’s Board.

Final approval, according to the law, is given, subsequent to a concurring and reasoned opinion of the Council of National Bequests, by the Region of Attiki, to whom the Ministry of Finance has transferred the relevant jurisdiction.

The list of successful candidates is posted on the Foundation’s website.

CRITERIA FOR CANDIDATE SELECTION

Applications for a scholarship from newly-admitted first-year students are assessed primarily on the basis of the collective university entrance examination points with which they were admitted to a Greek University. It is noted indicatively that, during the past four years, the average collective points of the last person on the list of successful scholarship candidates was 18,759.

In addition to the criterion of collective points, students who have graduated from secondary schools (Lykeia) of Ileia are preferred.
In the assessment process, family income and other social criteria are also taken into account.

Scholarship applications from students in their second year of undergraduate studies or beyond are examined solely if candidates have passed all their courses and have maintained an average grade of at least 8.5 out of 10 in their previous academic years.

SCHOLARSHIP DURATION

The scholarship consists of payment of a cash amount until the end of the scholar’s studies, on condition that all the criteria for awarding and renewing the scholarship are met. Its duration cannot be more than the time stipulated by the syllabus of the scholar’s university.

The scholarship is payable for the nine months of the academic year (October-June) and is renewed for every year thereafter, based on the progress of the scholar’s studies.

A scholarship cannot be postponed by the candidate. Also, the Foundation reserves the right to revoke or terminate a scholarship when it judges that grave reasons exist.

PREREQUISITES FOR SCHOLARSHIP RENEWAL

After the academic year is over and after the results of the supplemental examinations in September are published, scholars submit (not later than 30 November) to the Foundation an official transcript of their grades for the current and previous years, which will determine whether their scholarship will be renewed.

Specifically, for those candidates selected upon their entrance at university, renewal of their scholarship for each succeeding year is approved:
(a) after every academic year is over (i.e. after the examination periods of February, June and the supplemental one in September) where scholars are permitted no more than three incomplete courses (irrespective of academic year) and
(b) the average grade in the courses in which the scholar has passed the exams successfully must be at least 6.5 or 5 depending on the year in which he/she was admitted (see table below).

For those candidates selected for scholarship for the first time who are, however, already in the second year of university or above, renewal of their scholarship for each succeeding year is approved only if they have passed all their exams and their average grade is 8 and above.

Calculation of the average grade is based either on the courses taken in the last year or on the cumulative average of all previous years, whichever of the two is higher.

The scholarship is suspended if the scholar fails to meet the above conditions for one time and is discontinued if the scholar fails to meet the above conditions for two consecutive academic years.

AMOUNT OF FIRST-YEAR SCHOLARSHIPS

The 45 first-year scholarship recipients receive a monthly amount of €200 in their first year of registration on the Foundation lists. The 5  second- and subsequent- year students receive a monthly amount of €350 in their first year of registration on the Foundation lists.
